Kickboxing historically developed from karate, Muay Thai, and western boxing. A group of martial arts and stand-up combat sports that are based on punching and kicking is referred to as kickboxing. It is often used for many reasons such as general fitness, as a contact sport and even for self-defense.
The term itself can be used in either a wide or narrow sense. Using it in a narrow way can mean restricting its meaning to the styles that self-identify as kickboxing like American kickboxing or Japanese kickboxing. On the other hand, using it on a wider sense includes all the stand-up combat sports that allow both kicking and punching. Examples would be Indian boxing, Sanshou, Savate, Burmese boxing, Muay Thai and other styles of karate. In addition, the general meaning of the French term Boxe peids-poings which literally means “feet-fits-boxing” is also used in the sense of kickboxing.
It was in the 1960s when the term kickboxing was introduced as a Japanese Anglicism. Later, the term was adopted by the Americans. Nowadays, the history of each style can’t be seen in isolation from one another because of so many practitioners that have trained and competed under the rules of more than one style.
